Antimicrobial activity: In-vitro studies have shown succinic acid inhibits C. acnes growth [G41]. This is the primary mechanism by which it addresses acne — interrupting bacterial proliferation that contributes to comedone inflammation, similar to benzoyl peroxide (though weaker) and salicylic acid's follicular clearing.
Sebum regulation: Succinic acid is sometimes described as reducing sebum, but this is not established in published research and shouldn't be counted on.
Exfoliation: Succinic acid is often described as weakly keratolytic — potentially loosening dead-cell adhesion more gently than AHAs — though this is not well quantified in the published literature. For users who cannot tolerate AHAs at standard pH and concentration, succinic acid may offer some surface smoothing without the full irritation profile.

Sensitive acne-prone skin that develops significant redness, stinging, or peeling with standard 1–2% salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or lactic acid. Users in this category need some antimicrobial and mild exfoliating activity without the full barrier disruption of standard actives.
Maintenance between AHA/BHA cycles. Some users tolerate AHAs only a few times per week; succinic acid on the alternate days provides continued mild antimicrobial support without the accumulated acid load.

Succinic acid vs. azelaic acid
