The Empties Methodology: Why Drop Tracks What You Finished

Marking a product 'empty' is the most useful data point in your routine. Here is how Drop uses empties to recommend repurchases — and when to skip.

Why this matters

Most skincare apps want you to add. They show you new products, suggest dupes, push affiliate links. Drop runs the other way: we want to tell you when your routine is complete, when a product is done, and when you do not need to buy a replacement.

The empties methodology is one of the load-bearing parts of how that promise gets kept.

Why empties matter as data

When you finish a product, that single fact carries more useful information than almost any other event in your routine:

  • It tells us how long a product lasted, which approximates how often you used it.
  • It tells us whether you used it consistently enough for the documented results to apply 1,[H2].
  • It is the only natural moment to ask 'did this work?' without nagging you mid-routine.
  • It is the only moment when 'should I rebuy?' becomes a real question instead of a marketing prompt.

Most apps treat 'finished' as just another tag. We treat it as a lifecycle event with a structured follow-up.

The mark-as-empty flow

When you mark a product empty, Drop asks three questions:

  1. Did it work for you? — three options: yes / mixed / no. We do not score it on a 5-star scale; the granularity is illusory.
  2. Would you repurchase? — yes / maybe / no.
  3. Anything else worth noting? — optional one-line note that goes back to your record.

That is the entire interaction. It takes 15 seconds.

The answers feed three downstream decisions:

Decision 1 — repurchase or replace

If you said 'yes' to both 'did it work' and 'would I repurchase,' Drop's repurchase match screen surfaces the same product alongside one or two structurally similar alternatives — same role in your routine, similar key ingredients, comparable price tier. You can rebuy in one tap, or pick a similar product if you want a slight change.

If you said 'no' to repurchase, we ask whether you want a different product in the same category. If you say yes, the recommendation engine suggests options that target the same role as the empty product but with a different ingredient profile — useful when something did not work and you want to switch approaches without abandoning the routine slot.

If you said 'no' to a replacement, we accept that. The slot stays empty.

Decision 2 — was the routine slot ever necessary?

This is the part most apps skip. After a few empties, Drop has enough data to ask a quieter question: did you actually need that product?

For example: if you finish a third hyaluronic acid serum and your skin condition is fine, the routine probably has redundant hydration. If you finish a vitamin C serum and your hyperpigmentation has not changed in 6 months 2, the formulation may not have been the right tier of vitamin C for what you are trying to do. 3 4

The app asks softly. It does not lecture. The framing is 'here's a question worth thinking about,' not 'you wasted money.'

Decision 3 — when the routine is complete

After a year of empties, the routine you actually use shows itself. Some products you finish and rebuy without thinking. Some you finish and replace with something different. Some sit unfinished for months and quietly leave the rotation. The pattern is the routine.

Drop reads the pattern and tells you when the structure is stable 5. A complete routine is one where:

  • The four functional roles (cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect) are filled.
  • Each role has one product that you use consistently and would repurchase.
  • You have not added a new product in the last 90 days.

When the pattern fits, the app stops asking 'what should I add?' and starts asking 'how is your skin doing on what you have?' That is the whole idea.

What the data is not for

A few honest disclaimers about empties data:

  • We do not sell it. Aggregate empties patterns help us improve the recommendation engine; individual records stay yours.
  • We do not nudge you toward repurchasing things you said did not work.
  • We do not use empties to push you toward more-expensive products. The repurchase match defaults to the same tier you finished — drugstore stays drugstore, mid stays mid, prestige stays prestige.

The honest tradeoff

A routine that stays complete is a routine you do not need to keep changing. That is the goal — and it is, financially, the opposite of the optimal outcome for an affiliate-revenue app. We have made peace with that. The bet is that the trust you build by being told 'your routine is done' is worth more, over time, than the affiliate clicks you would lose.

What to actually do

If you are starting with Drop, the empties habit is the single most useful thing you can build:

  1. When you finish a product, mark it empty in the same week. Do not let products linger in the 'still using' state for months after they are done.
  2. Answer the three questions honestly. 'Mixed' is a valid answer; 'maybe' is not a copout.
  3. Use the optional note to capture context — 'broke me out in summer,' 'great for travel,' 'too thick for oily T-zone.' Future-you uses this when deciding to rebuy or skip.
  4. Trust the pattern. If the app says your routine looks complete, take it. The whole point of the methodology is to give you back time and money.

Bottom line

The empties methodology is how Drop turns the word 'finished' into the most useful checkpoint in your routine. Every empty is a data point that helps us decide what to recommend, what to question, and when to step back. If we are going to tell you 'your routine is complete' 5, we have to know — and so do you — what you actually finished.
