Clary Sage Oil

Salvia Sclarea Oil · Salvia Sclarea Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract

Essential oil commonly cited as contraindicated during pregnancy. Avoid on the face during the first and second trimester.

What it does

Clary sage is one of several essential oils flagged in obstetric and dermatologic guidance as contraindicated during pregnancy because of its hormone-influencing effects (it's traditionally used to induce labor). Outside pregnancy, it's a mild calming-aroma essential oil with limited dermatologic evidence.

The evidence, graded

expert consensusSeveral essential-oil constituents have documented reproductive toxicity and should be avoided in pregnancy — most notably trans-sabinyl acetate, thujone, camphor, pulegone, and methyl salicylate. Oils rich in these (juniper savin, hyssop, sweet fennel, thuja, Spanish lavender, Dalmatian sage, clary sage, high-camphor rosemary) are commonly listed for avoidance. Read INCI lists; essential oils often appear under fragrance.Dosoky 2021 · International Journal of Molecular Sciences
