An extract of the cocoa bean rich in polyphenols (flavanols, theobromine) that act as antioxidants in skincare formulas.
What it does
Cocoa extract is derived from the seed of Theobroma cacao and concentrates the polyphenols of the bean — primarily flavanols (epicatechin, catechin) and the alkaloid theobromine. In a formula these contribute antioxidant activity. It is a distinct ingredient from cocoa butter (the solid fat from the same bean, an emollient/occlusive) — the extract is included for its phenolic chemistry, not its lipid content.
