What it does
Coptis japonica (Japanese goldthread, related to Chinese goldthread Coptis chinensis) is a yellow-rooted herb with a long history of use in East Asian herbal traditions. Its root extract concentrates the isoquinoline alkaloid berberine plus related compounds (coptisine, palmatine). In cosmetic formulas these contribute antioxidant activity. The bright yellow color is a tell — berberine itself is a yellow pigment.
