Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene
Ethylhexyl MethoxycryleneSPF filter
A photostabilizer for sunscreen formulas — it absorbs excited-state energy from organic UV filters so they break down more slowly in sunlight.
What it does
Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene is an oil-soluble photostabilizer used alongside organic UV filters (notably avobenzone and octinoxate) to extend their photostability. Mechanistically it accepts excited-state energy from the filter molecule and dissipates it as heat, so the filter cycles back to its ground state intact instead of degrading. It is a supporting ingredient in sunscreen formulas; the labeled SPF/PA rating comes from the primary UV filters, and this molecule helps that rating hold over the hours after application.
