Evernia Furfuracea (Treemoss) Extract
Treemoss lichen extract used as a mossy fragrance base note; the most frequently positive of the EU-26 in patch-test data.
What it does
Evernia furfuracea is an extract of treemoss lichen, used in perfumery for a mossy, resinous base note similar to oakmoss. In a Copenhagen series that patch-tested all 26 EU-declarable fragrance ingredients individually, it was the single most frequently positive. Its main allergens, atranol and chloroatranol, were prohibited in the EU by Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410, so treemoss extract remains a declarable EU allergen but can only be used in the EU in a purified, atranol-free grade. Outside the EU there is no such requirement. It is a scent ingredient with no skin function.
