What it does

Himanthalia elongata is a brown macroalgae harvested along the European Atlantic coast. Its extract provides a mix of bioactive compounds common to brown seaweeds: fucoidans (sulfated polysaccharides with humectant and film-forming activity), phlorotannins and carotenoids (antioxidant activity), and minerals. In vitro studies of brown seaweed antioxidant fractions show free-radical scavenging activity; cosmetic-specific clinical data for Himanthalia elongata is limited. It is included in formulas as a botanical antioxidant and conditioning ingredient, often alongside other marine extracts.
