Malonic Acid
Malonic Acid
A small acid that sets a product’s pH.
What it does
It’s a small acid with two acid groups. Products use it to bring their pH to the level the formula needs.
The evidence, graded
expert consensusUS safety reviewers (2012) assessed dicarboxylic acids and their salts and esters; their index lists diisopropyl adipate, diisopropyl sebacate and malonic acid under that report. They say most of the acids adjust pH or add scent, and some of the esters condition or soften skin, or work as solvents. Data were missing for some members, so they extended the data on similar ones to the whole group, and judged the ingredients in the report safe as used in cosmetics.Fiume 2012 · International Journal of Toxicology ↗
