Methylparaben
Methylparaben
Shortest-chain paraben preservative. Effective and well-tolerated; the marketing fear outpaces the regulatory science.
What it does
Methylparaben is one of the longest-studied cosmetic preservatives. It prevents bacterial and fungal growth at very low concentrations (0.1–0.4%). The endocrine-disruption headlines that drove parabens out of brand marketing in the 2010s were based on cell-line and animal studies at concentrations far above topical exposure; major regulatory bodies (FDA, SCCS, Health Canada) continue to allow methyl- and ethylparaben as safe. Choosing 'paraben-free' is a marketing decision, not a safety upgrade.
The evidence, graded
strongCommon sensitivity and contact-allergy triggers in skincare include fragrance (the most-cited cosmetic allergen), essential oils, denatured alcohol, and certain preservatives (methylisothiazolinone, formaldehyde-releasers). This page is public and indexed on purpose (unlike profiles and drops, which are unlisted) — it’s the citation behind shared ingredient cards, and it should be findable.
