Rosemary essential oil, added for its herbal scent. Little research tests what it does on skin.
What it does
It’s the essential oil steam-distilled from rosemary leaves. Formulas add it for its sharp, herbal smell, and the EU also lists it as a skin conditioner.
The EU’s ingredient database lists it as a fragrance (adds scent).European Commission, CosIng (© European Union, CC BY 4.0) · uses put in plain words by Drop ↗
The evidence, graded
expert consensusUS safety reviewers (2018) judged 10 rosemary ingredients, rosemary leaf oil among them, safe as used in products made not to cause allergy. In tests they summarize, the oil at 10% didn’t irritate or cause allergy. Nor did a formula with 1.5% in a repeat patch test on people. Products may hold several plant ingredients that share the same compounds of concern, so makers should keep the total below harmful levels.Fiume 2018 · International Journal of Toxicology ↗
