Sea Kelp Extract

Laminaria Digitata Extract · Laminaria Saccharina ExtractHydrator

Brown-algae extract with polysaccharides and minerals. Lightweight humectant in marine-themed formulations.

What it does

Sea kelp extracts contribute polysaccharides (alginate, fucoidan, laminarin) that act as mild humectants and film-formers, plus trace minerals. Common in marine-positioned skincare. Useful as a supporting hydrating ingredient; the 'detoxifying' marketing is largely positioning rather than measured effect.

The evidence, graded

strongHydrating ingredients (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) show immediate plumping and dewy-finish effects within minutes. Barrier-repair products (ceramides, panthenol, niacinamide-as-barrier) show measurable improvement in 1-2 weeks.Pavicic 2011 · Journal of Drugs in Dermatology

Graded per the methodology: strong · moderate · emerging · expert consensus. A weak source on a strong claim gets the weaker label.
