Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium Bicarbonate
Baking soda, used to raise pH, tackle odor or add a little grit.
What it does
It’s baking soda, a mild alkali. Products use it to raise pH, to tackle odor in deodorants, and as a light scrub; it also fizzes in bath bombs when it meets an acid.
The evidence, graded
expert consensusUS safety reviewers judged sodium bicarbonate safe as used in 1987, and confirmed it in 2025 along with sodium carbonate and sodium sesquicarbonate. They’re used in bath, skin and hair products. For the 2025 look the reviewers weighed new studies, among them skin and eye irritation tests and studies in people, and found nothing that would change the conclusion.Fiume 2025 · International Journal of Toxicology ↗
