Witch Hazel
Tannin-rich plant extract. Mildly astringent; the alcohol-distilled version can dry out compromised skin.
What it does
Witch hazel water is the steam-distilled version (often containing 14–15% alcohol unless explicitly alcohol-free), while witch hazel extract is the more concentrated tannin-bearing form. Tannins provide the astringent feel. Useful as a clarifying step on oily, congested skin; counterproductive on dry, compromised, or rosacea-flaring skin where the alcohol content adds dryness on top of inflammation.
