What it does
Avobenzone is the most-used UVA filter in US sunscreens. On its own it degrades in sunlight, so modern formulas pair it with octocrylene or other stabilizers. Provides the long-UVA coverage missing from titanium-only mineral sunscreens.
The evidence, graded
emergingRetinoids are photolabile and oxidize under UV exposure; avobenzone is itself photo-unstable absent a photostabilizer, which is why combined-in-the-same-product retinoid + chemical filter formulations require engineered stabilization.
