Ceramides

Ceramide NP · Ceramide AP · Ceramide EOPBarrier

Lipid molecules that fill the spaces between skin cells. Replenishing them supports a damaged or aging barrier.

What it does

Ceramides make up about half of the skin's intercellular lipids; they decline with age and are stripped by harsh cleansing or active ingredients. Topical ceramides — especially in a 3:1:1 ratio with cholesterol and fatty acids — replenish the barrier.

The evidence, graded

strongThe skin's barrier is built from ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids in a roughly 1:1:1 to 3:1:1 ratio. Moisturizers formulated to mimic that ratio support barrier repair more than any one lipid alone.Man 1996 · Journal of Investigative Dermatology
expert consensusCeramide products are barrier-supportive and pair safely with all actives. Layering ceramides after an irritating active is a common tolerance strategy.Draelos 2018 · Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology
