Ectoin
EctoinHydrator
Bacterial-fermentation osmolyte. Hydrating and stress-protective; gentle on reactive skin.
What it does
Ectoin is a small osmolyte molecule originally found in extremophile bacteria. It binds water in a structured way that supports cellular hydration under stress. Topical effects include hydration support and modest soothing of reactive skin. Common in newer European 'sensitive skin' serums and post-procedure formulations. Generally very well tolerated.
The evidence, graded
strongHydrating ingredients (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) show immediate plumping and dewy-finish effects within minutes. Barrier-repair products (ceramides, panthenol, niacinamide-as-barrier) show measurable improvement in 1-2 weeks.Pavicic 2011 · Journal of Drugs in Dermatology ↗
Graded per the methodology: strong · moderate · emerging · expert consensus. A weak source on a strong claim gets the weaker label.
