Ergothioneine
Naturally occurring amino acid antioxidant that the body actively accumulates via a dedicated transporter; increasingly used in premium antioxidant serums.
What it does
Ergothioneine is an amino acid found in mushrooms, legumes, and oat bran. The body uses a special carrier protein (OCTN1) to take it up from food. This active uptake makes it unusual among antioxidants. In skin, it helps guard against free radical damage from UV exposure. Lab studies support its antioxidant action. Clinical trials on topical use for aging concerns are still emerging. Used in antioxidant serums and face creams. Well-tolerated at typical skin care amounts.
