Camellia Sinensis Leaf ExtractAntioxidant

Polyphenol-rich antioxidant. Calming + UV-photoprotection adjunct.

What it does

Green tea polyphenols (chiefly EGCG) neutralize free radicals from UV exposure and pollution. Best evidence is as an AM antioxidant adjunct alongside vitamin C and sunscreen. Common in soothing serums for sensitive skin.

The evidence, graded

strongTopical green tea polyphenols reduced UV-induced erythema in a dose-dependent way on human skin, and reduced sunburn cells, Langerhans cell damage and UV-induced DNA damage. EGCG and ECG were the active fractions. This is an adjunct to sunscreen, not a replacement for it.Elmets 2001 · Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology

Graded per the methodology: strong · moderate · emerging · expert consensus. A weak source on a strong claim gets the weaker label.
