Octocrylene

OctocryleneSPF filter

Chemical UV filter often blended with avobenzone to stabilize it. Effective; mild allergen risk for a small subset of users.

What it does

Octocrylene absorbs UVB and short UVA, but its more important role is photostabilizing avobenzone (which would otherwise degrade quickly under UV). Most modern chemical sunscreens that contain avobenzone include octocrylene for that reason. A 2021 study reported octocrylene degrading into benzophenone over time — the practical implication for daily-use cosmetics is debated, with most regulators concluding the exposure level is too low to be of concern.

The evidence, graded

expert consensusReapply sunscreen every two hours of continuous UV exposure. For indoor desk-bound days with no window light, the morning application is sufficient. For desk work near a window, UVA passes through standard glass — reapply 4–6 hours into the day. Cushion compacts and SPF powders can substitute for liquid reapply over makeup, but only with generous full-face application — a single light pass does not maintain rated SPF.Wang 2011 · Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology
moderateOctocrylene degrades into benzophenone via retro-aldol condensation, and the concentration rises as a product ages. Benzophenone was measured in 16 of 16 octocrylene-containing sunscreens and in none of the product without it. The regulatory significance is contested; the measurement is not.Downs 2021 · Chemical research in toxicology
emergingRetinoids are photolabile and oxidize under UV exposure; avobenzone is itself photo-unstable absent a photostabilizer, which is why combined-in-the-same-product retinoid + chemical filter formulations require engineered stabilization. For an evening retinoid plus a morning sunscreen this is rarely an issue, but if both are applied in the same window, mineral-only or explicitly photostabilized chemical sunscreens are the safer pairing.Wang 2011 · Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery
