Rice extract / fermented rice. K-beauty staple with mild brightening and humectant activity.

What it does

Rice water in cosmetics is most often the strained water from cooked or fermented rice, sometimes further processed into a freeze-dried extract. It contributes inositol, ferulic acid, B vitamins, and small amounts of starch — a mix of humectants and mild antioxidants. K-beauty products built around rice extract are positioned for brightening and surface-smoothing. Effects are gradual and modest.

The evidence, graded

expert consensusThe traditional K-beauty 10-step layering approach (oil cleanser → foam cleanser → toner → essence → serum → ampoule → sheet mask → eye cream → moisturizer → SPF) is fully compatible with Western actives but not necessary for results. Adding more steps does not equal more efficacy.Draelos 2018 · Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology

Graded per the methodology: strong · moderate · emerging · expert consensus. A weak source on a strong claim gets the weaker label.
